My Network Places only shows 1 or 2 computers, instead of the 85 or so that are normally there. I have seen this on a couple of other computers on the same network when looking at My Network Places. All computers are fully patched up to date using our WSUS server. Why would this be happening?

Check DNS also, they be using a different DNS server.

No, the same DNS server is being used as all the rest of the computers on the network.

Is the browser service running on all workstations?

Yep…

Do the machines appear in Entire Directory. My Network Places relies on the Computer Browser service (as per pgaliardo). If it is disabled on all servers, then you might see this behavior. Ensure that the browser service is enabled on your domain controllers or at least on one server in order to enumerate all the other machines. Hope this helps.

Yes, the Computer Browser Service is running on the domain controllers. This is only occurring on a couple of computers, all others are normal…

No, they do not appear in ‘Entire Directory’.

I have restarted the Computer Browser service and it still didn’t fix this problem. It still shows only 2 computers in My Network Places instead of the 85 or so that are normally there. Any ideas?

I agree with DBerg – it feels like a dns issue.

Are there any entries in the client event logs that might give us a clue ??

I’ve heard of similar issues with DNS reverse lookup zones having invalid entries, so it might be worth checking the host and pointer values on your DNS.
